A major search operation involving mountain rescue and fire services has been underway in the Neustift area in the Tyrolean Stubai Valley since Wednesday evening. A 78-year-old holidaymaker is missing.
The man left his home in Neugasteig (municipality of Neustift) on May 1 around 12:30 p.m. According to police, he wanted to go for a walk, but did not share his destination. The born Austrian, who lives in Belgium and is currently on holiday in the Stubai Valley, has never returned since. The alarm was raised in the evening.
Search canceled during the night
The Neustift mountain rescue service and four mountain rescue dog handlers from the districts of Innsbruck and Imst started a major search operation. “There were no concrete indications of where the man could be,” says mountain rescuer Florian Falkner from Oetz, who took part in the search together with his dog “Grisu”. The operation was initially interrupted around 3 a.m. with no results.
The search has continued since Thursday morning. In addition to mountain rescuers with sniffer dogs and the fire brigade, there is also water rescue. However, the holidaymaker is still missing.
