Johnson to stay in office – British Prime Minister wins no-confidence vote

Date:

British Conservatives voted to trust Prime Minister Boris Johnson. 211 MPs from Johnson’s Tories voted Monday night for Johnson to remain as party leader, 148 MPs voted no confidence in him. Among the British Conservatives, the office of prime minister is linked to that of party leader. The reason for the vote was the affair about parties in Johnson’s official residence during the corona lockdown.

Johnson had also been heavily criticized in his own ranks for a number of lockdown parties at his Downing Street office during the pandemic. Johnson was fined for attending one of the celebrations. This makes him the first sitting British Prime Minister to break the law. An investigative report accuses him and other officials of leadership failure and serious misconduct in adhering to the Corona rules. The 57-year-old apologized several times to the House of Commons in London. However, he refuses to resign.

War in Ukraine as reason for non-retirement
Johnson has so far refused to resign, citing the dire economic situation, Russia’s war against Ukraine and his “huge projects I was chosen for”. The prime minister also does not believe that a fine from London police for attending a lockdown event is a violation of government ethics rules.
