The “Ott case” puts the Graz spy center in the spotlight. Head Paul Schliefsteiner on the necessary lessons from the scandal and the threat of mass surveillance.
“Kron”: Mr. Schliefsteiner, you have been investigating secret services and espionage for years. What was your first thought when you heard about the “Ott case”?
Paul Schliefsteiner: Even though we already knew a lot about the conditions in the BVT (Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Combating of Terrorism, ed.), I did not think that something like this was possible in Austria. I was particularly surprised at the long period in which insider knowledge could flow. In any case, it does not have a good reflection on the Austrian state apparatus.
