Russia reports defense – Kiev attacks Crimea again with new American missiles

Date:

According to Russian information, Ukraine has again fired at the Crimean peninsula, which has been annexed by Moscow since 2014, with US-supplied missiles. The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday morning that air defenses had rejected four ATACMS missiles. There was no official statement from the Ukrainian side.

The exact consequences of the attack were initially unknown. According to unconfirmed reports, major fires broke out in central Crimea overnight as a result of the attack. The Russian side, which has been waging a war of aggression against its neighbor for more than two years, often only reports alleged successes of its own air defense in the event of Ukrainian drone or missile attacks.

ATACMS attacks on military bases
On Tuesday, Ukraine attacked the Russian army in Crimea with missiles recently supplied by the US. Independent media reported attacks on three military bases in Crimea. There were several injured. The attacks were aimed at combating Russian air defense systems.

The US had announced that it would also supply extended-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine as part of a new weapons package. In previous deliveries, the range of missiles of this type was limited to 165 kilometers. For the Russian army, Crimea is a staging area for the war of aggression against Ukraine. The supply of soldiers, weapons and ammunition runs across the peninsula. That is why Ukraine is trying to destroy Russian military targets in Crimea. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy aims to retake the peninsula.

Meanwhile, the aggressor attacked the country’s second largest city, Kharkov. As Mayor Ihor Terekhov announced on Saturday evening, three people were injured in two drone attacks on civilian targets. Among the injured were a 13-year-old child and a woman. A fire had also started and emergency services were on the scene.

“New phase of the war”
Meanwhile, Zelensky warned of an impending expansion of Russian attacks on his country. “We are now facing a new phase of the war,” Zelensky said Friday during a tribute to soldiers in the Khmelnytsky region, a video showed. He then added: “The occupiers are preparing for attempts to expand offensive operations. Together we must (…) do everything we can to thwart this Russian attack plan.”

From the perspective of Ukraine, which has been defending itself against a Russian war of aggression for more than two years, the situation at the front is currently very difficult. The Ukrainian military recently confirmed a Russian breakthrough not far from the city of Ocheretyne in the eastern Donetsk region.
