Brutal act in Dresden – teenager investigated after attack on politician

Date:

Four suspects have already been identified after the brutal attack on SPD MEP Matthias Ecke in Dresden. After a 17-year-old reported himself to the police on Sunday, the three others were now also being investigated, the Saxony state police and the Dresden public prosecutor announced on Monday. Evidence was seized during searches and is now being evaluated.

The four young men are 17 and 18 years old respectively. It will take some time before the investigation is completed, they say. After the searches of the apartment, two men were taken for identification purposes, reports ‘Bild’. The background to the crime is still unclear. The suspects are German citizens, the prosecutor explained.

SPÖ top candidate: “cowardly and brutal attack”
The attack on SPD member Ecke from Dresden as he put up election posters caused horror across Germany and sparked a debate about the escalation of violence during the election campaign. On Sunday, several thousand people demonstrated for democracy and against violence in Dresden and Berlin. German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called on everyone to conduct the political debate peacefully and with respect. The SPÖ’s leading candidate for the EU elections, Andreas Schieder, spoke on X, formerly Twitter, about a “cowardly and brutal attack” on his “German comrade”.

The beating victim had to undergo surgery
Ecke was attacked and seriously injured by several people on Friday evening while posting posters in Dresden. Ecke has been in hospital ever since. He had surgery on Sunday. The 41-year-old suffered a fracture of the cheekbone and eye socket, as well as hematomas to his face, Saxony SPD leader Henning Homann said. Police said the same group had also injured a nearby Green Party campaign worker shortly before the attack on Ecke.

No suspects after attack on Green Party politician in Essen
After the attack on two Green Party politicians in Essen, police are still looking for the unknown attackers. “We have not yet been able to identify any suspects,” a police spokeswoman said on Monday. The investigators now hope to track down the perpetrators through further information from witnesses.

In the incident in Essen, Bundestag member Kai Gehring and the third mayor of the city of Essen, Rolf Fliß (both Greens), said they had been attacked after a party event. After an initially friendly conversation, arguments and insults broke out. Finally, Fliß was hit in the face. He was slightly injured.
