Lavrov flight – Vucic complains about “hysteria” against Serbia

Date:

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic sees his country exposed to a ‘hysteria’ that has long since ceased to exist because of good contacts with the Kremlin. The backdrop to the excitement was a flight to Serbia, planned by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, that had to be canceled due to unauthorized overflight rights in North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Montenegro. The tension in Moscow and Belgrade is great.

Vucic reported on Monday evening the enormous pressure on his government: “You cannot imagine how many conversations there have been in which Serbia has been asked to refuse hospitality to the Russian foreign minister.” The Serbian president asked if the same treatment was also given “will apply to NATO member Turkey when Lavrov travels to Ankara”. And he immediately answered the question himself: “No, because you can only act so ruthlessly against a small country like Serbia.” According to Vucic, Serbia’s refusal to “always belong to the herd” would cause “headaches” at the moment.

Since Russia can’t do anything, they want to meet Serbia, said Vucic, who called Russia a traditional friend. At the same time, however, he did not emphasize that EU candidate country Serbia should “rush” on its way to the EU. “This is the best for Serbia, for our children,” he emphasized.

Serbia has repeatedly condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine, but does not want to join the international sanctions against Moscow. His country wants to retain its own decision-making power, Vucic emphasized again on Monday evening.

Important ally for Kosovo and energy
Russia is considered Belgrade’s main ally in its refusal to recognize the independence of its former province of Kosovo. In addition, the Balkan country is highly dependent on Russian energy imports. A new gas supply contract between the two countries was only recently signed.
