A building under construction in the South African coastal town of George collapsed on Monday. More than 40 construction workers were buried.
As a spokeswoman for the city government said, there were 70 people at the construction site at the time of the collapse early Monday afternoon. 22 injured people were taken to hospital. The search is on for 48 missing people.
“Seriously injured people were removed from the building,” said a spokesperson for the aid organization Gift of the Givers. The dead were not initially recovered. It is still unclear why the five-story building with underground parking garage that was under construction collapsed.
Debris and huge dust cloud
Eyewitness videos taken immediately after the accident show debris and a huge dust cloud above the construction site. “Our top priority right now is saving lives,” Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said.
