Due to current events, pediatric and adolescent surgeons from the Klagenfurt Clinic warn about the underestimated danger of robotic lawnmowers. More and more children are seriously injured by garden tools, such as an eleven-month-old boy recently.
On average, two to three small children per year have to be treated in the pediatric and adolescent surgery department of the Klagenfurt clinic with the most serious injuries, some even leading to amputations, as a result of accidents with robotic lawnmowers – as is currently the case with a boy of eleven months.
“Major foot injury”
“He was admitted to our department this weekend. The child was crawling in the garden when he was hit by the robotic lawnmower and suffered a serious injury to his foot,” reports department head Johannes Schalamon. The boy required two hours of surgery by an interdisciplinary team. “However, follow-up interventions are also needed,” says Schalamon.
Parents are not aware of the risks
As garden tools become more popular, doctors expect an increasing number of injured children. “Especially because parents are often not aware of the risk. The robots do not always respond to obstacles – which is why children of crawling age often get injured. But pets such as dogs also suffer serious injuries to their paws,” says senior doctor Christoph Arneitz, who therefore urges parents to be careful.
