New attacks – female politicians attacked in Dresden and Berlin

Date:

Just days after the attack on Saxony SPD MEP Matthias Ecke, Germany has seen further attacks on female politicians. In Berlin, economics senator Franziska Giffey (SPD) suffered minor injuries in a physical attack. In Dresden, a 47-year-old Green politician was attacked while putting up election posters, and police found two suspects.

Giffey (SPD) was attacked on Tuesday afternoon in a library in the Rudow district. A man suddenly attacked the former ruling mayor “from behind with a bag full of hard contents and hit him on the head and neck,” Berlin police and prosecutors said Wednesday evening. Giffey briefly went to the hospital for outpatient treatment for headaches and neck pain. The State Security Police took over the investigation.

After the attack on her party colleague Ecke, Giffey spoke on Twitter of a “despicable and shocking act”:

Two attackers in an attack in Dresden
The Green politician in Dresden – whose name the police initially did not want to reveal – was pushed aside, insulted and threatened by a 34-year-old man on Tuesday evening, Dresden police said. He also allegedly tore down two election posters. A 24-year-old woman passed by and suddenly spat on the politician – who was accompanied by aides and a film crew. Police found the two nearby. The 34-year-old German is being investigated for physical injuries, threats, insults and material damage and the 24-year-old German is being investigated for physical injuries.

Because the two are said to have previously joined a group that allegedly showed the Hitler salute, they are also being investigated for using the symbols of unconstitutional organizations. Both suspects remained on the run, the police spokesperson said.

Teenagers attacked the SPD’s top candidate
Just on Friday, the Saxon SPD’s leading candidate for the EU elections, Matthias Ecke, was beaten and seriously injured in Dresden by four young men aged 17 and 18 when he tried to put up election posters. The Criminal Police of the State of Saxony (LKA) believes that at least one of them belongs to the right-wing spectrum. Police said the same group had likely injured a nearby Green Party campaign worker shortly before attacking Ecke.

On Tuesday, the federal and state ministers of the Interior met for a special meeting in light of the attacks and also spoke in favor of tightening criminal law to better protect politicians and election campaigns.
