In Garsten (Upper Austria) another dead water bird was found, which probably did not die of natural causes. The animal is said to have been cruelly used by unknown people. According to eyewitnesses, the beautiful water bird had been swimming quite happily in the Steyr just a few hours earlier.
Margarete W. made a gruesome discovery on Monday around 7:30 am during a walk along the Steyr in Garsten. About 50 meters above the Krugl Bridge, she suddenly saw a dead swan in the water on the other side.
Animal rights activists sounded the alarm
She alerted animal rights activist Doris Adami, who immediately went to retrieve the carcass from the river. “It was a four-year-old swan who had a hole in her stomach with intestines coming out of it.”
No bite marks
The smooth cut in the abdominal wall made it clear to her that the bird could not have been killed by other animals and there were no bite marks. “A hunter I know said the swan was probably shot with a bow and arrow,” said Adami, who first alerted the official veterinarian and then the police.
She herself had seen four swans swimming near the bridge at 8 p.m. on Sunday: “Everyone was still very happy. I have seen many carcasses, but the sight of this animal shocked me so much that I could not eat anything all day.”
Criminal charges filed
On Tuesday, the organization Tierschutz Austria filed a criminal complaint with the police and the public prosecutor’s office against unknown perpetrators on suspicion of intentional murder and animal cruelty (§ 222).
