Panda bears are a big draw for many zoo visitors around the world. Probably for this reason, the management of a Chinese zoo, whose area is too small to keep real bamboo eaters, has come up with a special trick. But the fraud was recently discovered.
At first glance, visitors to the zoo in the city of Taizhou in the coastal province of Zhejiang thought they were looking at cute baby pandas. But upon closer inspection, the fake pandas flew away. These were puppies of the Chow Chow breed, with their coats cut and dyed accordingly.
The “new attraction” was announced on the occasion of Labor Day. Now there is great anger. Accusations of animal cruelty and deliberately misleading visitors are made on social media.
Zoo emphasizes: No harm to puppies
The zoo defends itself, insisting that the Chow Chow puppies would not be harmed by the color of their fur and that the new attraction had signs advertising it as ‘panda dogs’. A zookeeper told Chinese media that conditions at the Taizhou Zoo unfortunately do not allow keeping real pandas. A nurse came across the idea of chow chows online.
By the way, the common name for pandas in China means ‘big bear cat’. Hopefully next time cats won’t have to be used for such an action.
