In the Dietersdorf am Gnasbach district of St. Peter am Ottersbach (Styria), a fire broke out on Thursday evening in a farm building containing more than 1,000 pigs. Several hundred animals died. 24 fire brigades with approximately 300 emergency services were needed.
Around 8 p.m., an employee at the pig farm called the fire brigade after noticing the smell of fire and eventually flames coming from the back of the stable. Within a very short time the entire stable building was completely engulfed in flames.
About 1700 fattening pigs in stables
A number of fire brigades responded to the large fire. “The stable building is completely on fire,” said press officer Erwin Irzl on Thursday evening.
At that time there were approximately 1,700 fattening pigs in the stable. The firefighters did everything they could to save the pigs.
About a thousand animals were rescued and housed in replacement stables. Several hundred fattening pigs died or had to be put out of their misery in the presence of official veterinarians.
Two people injured
24 fire brigades with a total of 298 firefighters were deployed to fight the fire. Two emergency services were slightly injured. A “fire out” was reported around 1:20 am.
The Styrian State Police, fire investigation area, took over the further investigation in collaboration with an expert. People were not at risk. The stable works fully automatically.
