According to the UN, about 110,000 people have fled the coastal city, which is overcrowded with refugees, since the Israeli army advanced to Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. The living conditions are considered cruel. The only hope: an immediate ceasefire.
People are looking for safety, the Palestinian aid organization UNRWA wrote on Friday morning on X. The Rafah border crossing to Egypt remained closed to humanitarian aid deliveries.
The Israeli military said troops continued to operate in the east of the city of Rafah and in Al-Saitun in the central Gaza Strip. In Rafah, the army discovered several tunnel entrances.
Several terrorist cells eliminated
“Several terrorist cells were eliminated” during fighting on the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing into Egypt. The Israeli Air Force also attacked several areas in the Rafah area from which rockets and mortar shells had been fired into Israel in recent days.
The Kerem Shalom border crossing, which serves as a key border crossing for humanitarian supplies on the blockaded coastal strip, was also targeted. In Al-Saitun, the army had “eliminated several terrorists and destroyed terrorist infrastructure,” the report said. The air force attacked approximately 40 targets in the Gaza Strip within 24 hours.
The US sent words of warning to Israel
The Israeli army on Monday called on residents of the eastern part of Rafah to leave the area. It is said that there are more than a million internally displaced persons in Rafah. Israel’s Western partners, especially the US, have urgently warned the Israeli government against a large-scale military operation in Rafah due to the expected dramatic humanitarian consequences. Israel wants to completely destroy Islamist Hamas after the Oct. 7 massacres in Israel, whose leaders it suspects are in tunnels under Rafah, where Israeli hostages are likely being held for their protection.
