Once again a DNA test confirms the crack of a deer: this time in Oberhofen am Irrsee, right on the border area with Salzburg. A wolf expert also advises caution during the upcoming Alpine migration.
In mid-April, a dead deer was found bitten off in the Upper Austrian border community of Oberhofen am Irrsee. Now, after a DNA test, it is finally clear: the wolf got the four-legged friend. Experts from the neighboring state suspect that the predator may have also attacked a pony. Salzburg’s wolf representative, Hubert Stock, emphasized when asked: “Due to the range, it could well be that the wolf was also on the move in our state.”
Advises caution
There were recently reports of a possible wolf sighting in Straßwalchen, but this has not been confirmed, says Stock: “The photos are too blurry. It could be another animal.”
When asked about the upcoming migration to the pastures, Stock also advises caution: “This is the time when the young wolves leave the pack and go hunting on their own. In combination with the livestock movement, there could now be an increase in incidents.”
