Spectacular rescue – Stephansdom: Tourist had to be hoisted down

Date:

A tourist in Vienna had to be rescued from a great height on Friday afternoon. On his way to the top of the south tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, he suddenly collapsed. Those present alerted the emergency services.

They were able to provide emergency medical care to the man in the south tower. The Vienna Rescue Rope Technology Task Force and the fire brigade’s altitude rescue team then worked together to free the 76-year-old from his predicament.

The tourist wanted to visit the tower room, but suffered medical problems at a height of 70 meters on the south tower. The fire brigade set up an anchor point where the man could abseil into the cathedral. The patient was handed over to emergency services on site and taken to a hospital.

The fire brigade was on site with 22 emergency services and the rescue team was with the rope technology group. Further information, such as the cause of the collapse, was not initially available.
