An incident took place in Belgium on Thursday evening during the broadcast of the semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC): at the beginning (9 p.m.) and at the end (11.10 p.m.) a text panel could be seen on which trade unions criticized the policy of Israel.
The Israeli government was accused, among other things, of violating human rights and destroying press freedom in the war in Gaza. The Belgian TV association ACOD claimed responsibility for the message, which was written in Flemish. “We have been following events in the Middle East with horror for months. We are convinced that the State of Israel is committing genocide and it is therefore a scandal that an Israeli candidate takes part in the Eurovision Song Contest,” said the responsible union members.
Broadcast management was notified
Doing nothing is no longer an option. The union spread its message nationally and informed the broadcaster in advance. This was confirmed by the Flemish broadcaster VRT. It was said that the unions did not need approval for this. The Israeli ambassador to Belgium, Idit Rosenzweig-Abu, criticized the protest and called it ‘anti-Israeli lies’.
An anti-Israel rally was also held on Thursday in Malmö, Sweden, the location of the ESC. Among them was climate activist Greta Thunberg. Major demonstrations against the Israeli government have also been announced for Saturday.
