Over the past four months, Tunisian authorities have prevented the departure of 21,000 migrants wanted to be shipped to Italy by human traffickers. “This is a concrete sign that such a complex phenomenon can only be tackled with a common strategy,” the Italian Interior Ministry said.
The Italian government is increasing efforts to return migrants to their countries of origin. This is done with the help of the International Organization for Migration IOM. “These efforts allowed 161 people to return safely from Tunisia to Gambia, where they received medical care and guidance on their path to integration,” the Interior Ministry in Rome said.
Since the beginning of the year, 17,698 migrants have landed illegally in Italy, up from 45,155 in the same period in 2023, the Italian Interior Ministry said on Monday. More than half came to Italy via Libya.
