According to the National Research Institute NIWA, 80 percent of the rainfall otherwise measured during the summer has fallen in some areas. “It is possible that parts of Auckland will get as much rain in one day as they would in an entire summer,” NIWA tweeted. The Vorote Kumeu and Albany were particularly affected. Numerous roads were closed and airport terminals were also flooded.
Videos and photos of the storm have been seen on social networks such as Twitter, including flooded streets, parking lots, beaches and homes. Green Party politician Golriz Ghahraman tweeted that the scenes unfolding in the flooded areas were “terrifying” and take it seriously in our actions.”
