Strictly confidential – self-test keeps seniors fit for traffic

Date:

The motoring club ÖAMTC continues the debate on the new EU driving license directive. The motto is self-evaluation instead of regulation.

The discussion caused a stir, especially in Austria. As is known, the new directive stipulated that older drivers had to visit the doctor at very short intervals in order to keep their driver’s license. Nothing has come of this for the time being, but sooner or later the discussion will flare up again.

The offer is not only aimed at seniors
Either way, it doesn’t hurt to check your skills behind the wheel from time to time. In collaboration with driving schools, the ÖAMTC has launched a “fitness to drive check”. The offer is not only aimed at seniors, but also at irregular drivers and people returning to the sport – now in all states.

The results of the trip are strictly confidential
This is a voluntary observation trip. The participants drive under the supervision of a driving instructor in their own car and in a familiar environment. Only drivers and teachers know the results; neither the authorities nor family members are aware.

The main emphasis is on speed, vehicle controls and viewing technology. At the end of the ride (90 minutes, costs: 179 euros) you will receive professional feedback with tips and recommendations about driving style and road safety.

The EU also relies on self-evaluation
In early December 2023, EU Member States agreed on a common position on the reform of EU driving license rules. Driving licenses must therefore be renewed every fifteen years. Driving skills tests should also not be mandatory; the EU relies instead on the self-assessment of drivers.
