The Palestinian people commemorate the Nakba as Gaza is under siege and another forced exodus is underway

Date:

The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) has stressed that Palestinians “will not accept” a new Nakba. This Wednesday, mobilizations in support of Palestine will be repeated around the world, including in Basque capitals, municipalities and universities.

On Monday, Israel began celebrating Independence Day, the commemoration of the 76th anniversary of its state constitution, which culminated on Tuesday. However, for the Palestinian population, this fact is no reason to celebrate, especially in the current circumstances. In recent days, there have been orders to evacuate Ráfah, in the already besieged Gaza, in what appears to be another forced exodus without the possibility of return, a new Nakba.

Nakba is an Arabic term that means ‘catastrophe’ or ‘disaster’ in that language and is used to describe the Palestinian exodus. Also known as the “Palestinian catastrophe”was the destruction of Palestinian society and the Palestinian homeland between 1947 and 1948, and the permanent displacement of the majority of Palestinian Arabs.

The term is used to describe both the events of 1948 such as the current occupation of Palestinians in their occupied territories (the West Bank and Gaza Strip), as well as their persecution and displacement in the Palestinian territories and in the Palestinian refugee camps in the region.

The shadow of a new Nakba

As the Israelis live through symbolic days, their army continues attacks in Rafah, in the far south of Gaza, which previously hosted 1.4 million refugees, but many people have already given up trying to escape the bombardments.

The Israeli offensive against Gaza since October 7 has killed more than 35,000 people, most of them children and women, and injured more than 78,000, with 10,000 missing and believed to be trapped under the rubble.

The Palestinian Authority said on Tuesday that a large-scale invasion of the city of Rafah, on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, would be “a big mistake” by Israel and warned of the “dangerous consequences” of the Israeli army’s attacks against the city , from which they have already fled about half a million Palestinians.

The spokesperson for the Palestinian presidency, Nabil abu Rudeinahas noted that the United States “is responsible for these dangerous repercussions, which will impact the region and the world as a whole, for its failure to intervene to force the occupying government to stop the invasion of Ráfah” .

Abu Rudeina has stressed the need for Washington to “take action” and “not limit itself to statements and condemnations” with the aim of “immediately” stopping the attack on Gaza and allowing the entry of humanitarian aid before he stressed that the Palestinians “will not accept a new Nakba.

“We will not accept another catastrophe and we will not allow a repeat of what happened in 1948 and 1967,” he declared, adding that the region will not achieve peace and security without “a just solution” to the Palestinian cause. It concerns the recognition of the state of Palestine on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This Wednesday the mobilizations in support of Palestine all over the world, including in Basque capitals, municipalities and universities.

The Movement for the Boycott of Israel (BDZ) is holding several mobilizations in the capitals of Hegoalde. The first took place after midnight in Pamplona, at 00:00, a meeting in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Demonstrations are planned in Bilbao (Elliptical Square), Donostia-San Sebastián (Boulevard) and Vitoria-Gasteiz (Plaza de la Virgen Blanca) at 7 p.m.

In addition, they have organized a sit-in at the University of Deusto at 1 p.m., where a Palestinian minor will read a manifesto, and a rally will take place at the Bilbao Engineering School at 6 p.m.
