The Italian Ilaria Salis, who has been detained in Hungary for fifteen months, can celebrate a partial success against the Hungarian legal system. The left-wing activist is allowed to leave her cell and is placed under house arrest.
Lawyers for the 39-year-old primary school teacher from the northern Italian city of Monza had filed an appeal against a judge’s ruling that denied her house arrest in both Italy and Hungary on March 28. Salis must wear an ankle bracelet and pay a bail of approximately 40,000 euros to be released. The teacher is a candidate of the Italian left-wing party “Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra” (Alliance of Greens and Left/AVS) for the EU elections in a northern Italian constituency.
In January, a trial against the northern Italian woman began in Budapest, during which she was brought into the courtroom in handcuffs and ankle shackles. This caused an uproar in Italy. Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni promised to stand up for his compatriot. The woman faces eleven years in prison. Her father had reported several times about the allegedly inhumane conditions in which his daughter was being held in a prison in Budapest.
The Italian woman is said to belong to the infamous ‘hammer gang’.
The Italian teacher describes herself as an anti-fascist. She is accused of, together with other participants from the left-wing scene, violently attacking a group of right-wing extremists in February last year who wanted to commemorate the Waffen-SS and Hungarian soldiers in an action. According to authorities, nine people were injured, six of them seriously. The teacher has pleaded not guilty.
German couple convicted of attacks
Salis and a German couple are said to belong to the ‘Hammergange’ group around the German left-wing extremist Lina E., who has attacked and injured suspected neo-Nazis and right-wing extremists in the past. Some of the German activists have already been convicted for this.
