Slovak police have identified the attacker as Juraj Cintula, a 71-year-old writer, member of the Association of Slovak Writers and founder of a literary group.
Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico is in serious condition on Wednesday five shots and undergo emergency surgery lasting several hours. Although there is very little official information about the attack, Slovak police have already released the identity of the alleged perpetrator: he is Juraj Cintulaa 71-year-old writer, member of the Association of Slovak Writers and founder of a literary group.
Cintula had really shown herself critic on social networks his disagreement with Fico’s policies. Even after being arrested minutes after the shooting, he stated on camera, in a video released by authorities, that he “disagreed with the government’s policies.”
Born in Slovakian city Levice, wrote three collections of poetry and published two books in 2010 and 2015. Since 2015 he has been a member of the Association of Slovak Writers. Eight years ago he announced on the internet that he was collecting signatures for a political party called Movement Against Violence. “Violence is often a reaction from people, as a form of expression of dissatisfaction with the situation. We can be dissatisfied, but not violent!” he wrote then.
Apparently Cintula had done that too license to carry weapons and had previously worked as a security guard for a private security company.
Rico returned to power last October after winning the election for the fourth time with a nationalist, pro-Russian and anti-immigration discourse, which has caused a polarization of the country. In recent weeks, Slovakia has witnessed mass protests against controversial government decisions, such as the closure of the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office, which investigated members of Fico’s party, and plans to close the public radio and television station RTVS.
