In a community building – Huge heating costs due to abandoned windows

Date:

The wooden windows are leaking, it’s pulling in. As a result, the already expensive heating costs in a municipal building in the 20th district of Vienna increase even more. The tenants are demanding new windows, but the municipality sees it differently.

The doubling of the prices for district heating will probably lead to a tripling of the amount for the tenants of the town hall in Pappenheimgasse in the annual accounts. Because most of the windows in the buildings there have been desolate for years.

Desolate double wooden windows
One of those affected is Gerhard W. His apartment still has the old double wooden windows. Since they were not regularly maintained and repaired, they are now abandoned. The windows no longer close properly in the frame and the windows do not close properly due to the warped wooden frames. “This creates huge heating costs in the cold season,” says FPÖ housing ombudsman Michael Niegl.

“The condition of the windows is catastrophic!”
“You can only describe the situation as catastrophic,” says W. “In the meantime, there is even a risk of injury because I have already encountered such desolate windows.” Together with other tenants, he finally demands that they be replaced with new windows. They receive support from the FPÖ. For example, Markus Lenhard of the Österreichischer-Mietenschutz-Ring (ÖMR) requests the inspection of the windows by independent experts at MA 50.

According to Wiener Wohnen, tenants are responsible themselves
According to the tenants, the craftsmen from Wiener Wohnen could never have identified such gross grievances. “Wrongly”, emphasizes W. Only one resident had the windows renewed. Wiener Wohnen invokes the Rent Act, according to which the tenants themselves must bear the costs of repairing the inner wings.

FPÖ leader Dominik Nepp sees it differently: “The condition of the windows is unreasonable. Wiener Wohnen has a task here.”
