Most recently, Russia’s alleged military buildup in space caused an uproar, but now the country surprised people with a request to the UN not to use space for military purposes – and is failing. The US is now accusing the Russians of ‘hypocrisy’.
The Russian text called on all states to “take urgent measures to prevent at all times the placement of weapons in space and the threat or use of force.” However, of the fifteen countries in New York on Monday, only seven voted in favor of the draft resolution, seven were against and Switzerland abstained.
US detects manipulative tactics
China was among the supporters; the US, Britain, France and several other countries voted against the text. In view of a United States resolution against nuclear weapons in space, which failed last month due to the Russian veto, US Representative Robert Wood spoke about Moscow’s manipulative tactics.
Distraction from “dangerous actions”?
Wood called Russia’s move “hypocritical” and said Russia simply does not want the Security Council to focus on Russia’s “dangerous actions in space.”
Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya responded that the vote marked a turning point “between those who want peaceful uses of space and those who favor the militarization of space.” Western countries have proven to be largely isolated in the Security Council, he claimed.
Russia itself has nuclear ambitions in space
The debate at the United Nations follows American reports from February about Russian nuclear ambitions in space. The nuclear potential would have to target satellites and could therefore pose a threat to national and international security, it was said. The US government subsequently stated that Russia was developing military capabilities for use against satellites; no information was provided on the specific nature of this threat.
Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected the accusations. People are against stationing nuclear weapons in space. Moscow described the American draft resolution in the Security Council as propaganda.
