1080 euro fine – alcohol accident with daughter: policewoman convicted

Date:

The unwise action of a policewoman from Styria (33) had serious consequences: on March 17, she crashed her newly purchased Audi – in a drunken state – into a bridge railing, and her daughter was also in the car. The teenager suffered bruises and therefore the woman now had to answer for bodily harm due to negligence before the district judge in Leibnitz (Styria).

“That was such incredible nonsense on my part. I’m really not like that, I don’t even like it. Normally I am the one who picks people up after they have had a drink,” she burst into tears in the courtroom.

Unforeseeable circumstances
Her lawyer Andreas Kleinbichler underlines her statement: “If she drinks at all, she only drinks on special occasions, such as during a party.” The day was a series of absolutely unfortunate, unforeseeable circumstances, he explains. After she unexpectedly met old friends in a bar, the misfortune began. When she got home and was toasting with the neighbors, she woke up because she had forgotten to pick up her daughter from work.

Completely out of her senses, she got into her Audi, which was only three months old, and drove away. It happened on the way home, due to a driving error she crashed in Lebring-St. Margarethen against a bridge railing. Two hours after the incident she still had 1.1 per mille.

Suspended from service
The rest is known. Moreover, she was suspended and the financial losses are enormous. Nevertheless, “You have damaged the reputation of the police,” the prosecutor explains. The judge also follows this example: “Today you are the third person with me who has caused an accident under the influence of alcohol. Through your work you have already seen a lot that you would rather not see.” He sentenced the 33-year-old to a fine of 1,080 euros. The judgment is not final.
