A ray of hope for cancer patients: For the first time, a team of researchers in the US has succeeded in creating a drug that makes deadly ulcers disappear in the gut. Twelve patients participated in the study and all were cured of their terrible illness after six months of treatment.
Although the scope of the study was small, the development of dostarlimab is considered groundbreaking, this active substance is a so-called monoclonal antibody. However, the drug can only be used in up to a tenth of patients with colorectal cancer. Namely, in those who have a gene mutation in their tumor, which was the case in all study participants.
Even American doctors are surprised by the results of the study. “This is really exciting,” explains study co-author Luis Diaz. “I think this is a big step forward for patients.” In a next step, the doctors want to expand the research to patients with stomach, prostate and pancreatic cancer.
