Tornadoes have left a path of destruction in the US state of Iowa. Even wind turbines were toppled and several people were killed.
Twelve tornadoes were reported to have ripped through Iowa on Tuesday; the small town of Greenfield was hit hard. “This tornado destroyed a large portion of this city,” Iowa State Patrol spokesman Alex Dinkla said at a news conference. He confirmed that there had been several fatalities. Numerous buildings were razed to the ground.
The hospital was damaged – patients were transferred
A triage center was set up in a secondary school where injured people could go. The local hospital was damaged by the storm and patients were transferred to nearby towns. Authorities imposed a curfew in the city that would last until Wednesday morning. Media representatives were asked to leave the city.
The storm eventually moved east and also affected the states of Illinois and Wisconsin. There was a temporary power outage in 130,000 households.
