Terrible accident in the Brenner Base Tunnel in Tyrol: A forklift driver collided with a truck at the tunnel construction site and was thrown from the driver’s cab. The 41-year-old employee was fatally injured. An autopsy was ordered.
The tragic accident took place on Tuesday around 2:30 p.m. in a supply tunnel in the municipality of Steinach am Brenner.
The 41-year-old was transporting a metal pipe into the supply tunnel with a forklift. “For reasons still unclear, the worker collided with a truck parked on the southern wall of the tunnel. The man was thrown from the driver’s cab of the forklift truck,” police reported.
Autopsy ordered, forklift secured
All help came too late for the 41-year-old; he suffered fatal injuries in the accident. The public prosecutor has ordered an autopsy.
The forklift was also seized. Once the investigations are completed, reports will be submitted to the Innsbruck Public Prosecutor’s Office, the responsible safety authority and the labor inspectorate.
Workers were hit by a train in March
Serious accidents occurred several times during the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel. Just in March, a worker (57) was hit by a construction train in the Sill Gorge in Innsbruck and was fatally injured.
