The Russian Ministry of Defense has reported the capture of the strategically important village of Andriyivka in Donbass, eastern Ukraine. Ukraine has not yet commented on this. Meanwhile, several people have been killed and injured in a Russian missile attack on the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine.
In September 2023, Ukraine said it had recaptured Andriyivka, near Bakhmut, from Russian forces, and new fighting was reported there again in January. The city is considered largely destroyed.
Dead and missing people in Kharkov
Preliminary information indicates at least four deaths in Kharkov, military governor Oleh Synjehubov said. “The Russian army carried out at least 15 attacks,” he said. Mayor Ihor Terekhov also wrote about seven people injured and several people still missing. Objects in the field of transport infrastructure, as well as a private company, were affected.
Zelensky: “Extremely brutal attack”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the “extremely brutal attack.” The “Russian terrorists” would take advantage of Ukraine’s inadequate anti-aircraft defenses, he further wrote
Zelenskyy demands that the US and other Western allies be allowed to use the weapons supplied to attack Russia, for example to stop its advance in the Kharkiv region. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that no arms supply from the West could deter Russia from its war aims.
Russian threat against Britons “beyond the borders of Ukraine”
On the contrary: if Ukraine fired British weapons into Russian territory, the Kremlin would threaten to attack British targets. Such attacks could be targeted “on the territory of Ukraine and beyond its borders,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday. In doing so, it reiterates a warning recently issued by Russian leaders.
The reason was British Foreign Secretary David Cameron’s statement that Ukraine had the right to use weapons supplied by London against targets in Russia. Russia responded angrily, citing the comments as a reason for current military exercises, including a simulation of the launch of tactical nuclear missiles.
