EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has accused Russia of “provocative actions” at the border with Estonia. He criticized the removal of buoys in the Narva border river between the two countries as “unacceptable”, he said in Brussels on Friday.
“This border incident is part of a broader pattern of provocative behavior and hybrid actions by Russia, including at the maritime and land borders in the Baltic Sea region,” Borrell said. The Estonian government announced on Thursday that Russian border guards had removed half of the fifty buoys from the Narva at dawn.
The Narva is part of the border between the two countries. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the position of the metal buoys used to mark shipping routes between the two countries has been disputed.
France assures Estonia of full solidarity
“Russia has multiplied its provocations,” French Foreign Minister Séjourné said Friday in the online service X. He assured the Estonian government of “full solidarity in the face of these unacceptable aggressive actions.”
It was only in mid-February that the Estonian secret service announced that it believed Russia was preparing militarily for a sustained confrontation with the West. This is what Russia’s military reform indicates, according to an annual report presented in Tallinn by the Baltic EU country’s foreign intelligence service.
The troops on the Estonian border increased
Accordingly, the said military reform means a significant increase in the number of Russian armed forces near the border of the Baltic state in the coming years. Russia also plans to station more troops on the border with Finland and the other Baltic states.
