Pirates hijacked a Hamburg freighter off the coast of the East African country of Somalia. According to the EU Navy’s Operation Atalanta, the incident took place on Thursday evening in the Indian Ocean, about 700 kilometers east of the Somali capital Mogadishu.
A European Union warship (EUNAVFOR) patrolling the area came to the ship’s aid and freed the Liberian-flagged multipurpose cargo ship “Basilisk”.
One crew member was slightly injured
The 17 crew members were safe, the operational command of Operation Atalanta, a multinational European Union mission in place since 2008 to protect humanitarian aid deliveries to Somalia, said Friday in Rota, Spain. One crew member was injured in the attack but is in stable condition.
The approximately 160 meter long freighter is owned by the Hamburg Minship shipping company. According to the Atalanta command, it was heading north at the time of the attack. After the warship arrived, Marines rappelled onto the freighter from a helicopter (see left photo in the post above).
Pirate attacks are more common in the maritime area. The multinational naval mission Atalanta has been patrolling there since 2008 to secure the important shipping route.
