A fire broke out on Friday in the small workshop of a traditional galvanizer and tire maker in the center of Graz. The 84-year-old owner was able to escape unharmed. However, the interior was severely damaged.
Plumes of smoke rose in the center of Graz around lunchtime on Friday. According to the Graz Fire Department, a fire broke out in the workshop of a long-standing galvanizer and tire maker on Färbergasse due to working with a heat gun.
The 84-year-old owner was able to escape unharmed and alerted the fire brigade. An unknown customer who happened to be in the workshop had previously tried in vain to fight the fire with a fire extinguisher. According to police, the man then ran away.
The fire brigade quickly brought the fire in the workshop under control. The fire had already spread to the roof of the company. What was treacherous were the embers glowing under the roof and creating a lot of smoke. The roof was opened from the outside to extinguish the embers.
The extent of the damage has not yet been determined.
