At least a hundred people have been killed in a landslide on the island of Papua New Guinea. According to media reports, an entire village was destroyed.
The natural disaster occurred at 3 a.m. local time on Friday in the village of Kaokalam in the northern highland province of Enga, Australian television channel ABC reported. Bodies would be recovered from the rubble.
“It happened early in the morning, when people were still sleeping, and the entire village was destroyed,” said Elizabeth Laruma, head of a local women’s association. “As far as I know, at least a hundred people are buried underground.” The province of Enga is located about 600 kilometers from the capital Port Moresby.
Difficult terrain for rescue teams
Local news site JB143 PNG spoke on Facebook of “catastrophic destruction”. It is not yet certain how many people are buried. “The full extent of the number of victims is not yet known,” the report said. Rescue teams would have difficulty reaching the region due to the difficult terrain and the sheer size of the landslide. The Porgera gold mine, one of the largest gold mines in the world, was also affected by the landslide.
