Dangerous accident on the A2 South: On Friday evening, a coach with 42 passengers collided with a transport of hazardous substances containing hydrogen. Miraculously, everyone involved escaped with minor injuries.
Late Friday evening, a dangerous accident on the A2 South ended slightly. A Czech tour group with 42 members was on its way to Graz when the 53-year-old bus driver – probably as a result of micro-sleep – encountered a transport of dangerous goods shortly before Bad Waltersdorf. The fatal thing: the truck had liquid hydrogen on board.
Blessing in disguise
But miraculously, the very sensitive cargo remained undamaged, although the coach was seriously damaged by the impact. Three of the occupants were also slightly injured and a nine-year-old boy was taken to hospital for examination. The remaining group was driven from the highway to the armory by the Hartberg, Bad Waltersdorf and Unterlungitz fire brigades.
Food, beds and toys for those involved in the accident
There and in heated tents, the firefighters have set up emergency sleeping quarters for the Czech tourists. They received medical care, food and the children were even offered coloring books, cuddly toys and a movie night in the converted training room. The truck drove with an accompanying vehicle to Lower Austria, where the hydrogen bottles were professionally reloaded. The highway was only passable in one lane for more than three hours towards Graz.
