He planned to travel to Spain on May 17, but the intensification of the Russian offensive on the city of Kharkov led him to postpone the visit. The purpose of this agreement is for Ukraine to have predictability regarding the aid it will receive over a certain period of time.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiywill be postponed today, Monday visit to Spain including with a view to signing the security agreement with the Spanish government, as confirmed by sources familiar with the displacement.
Zelensky had planned to travel to Madrid on May 17, but the intensification of the Russian offensive on the city of Kharkov, the country’s second largest, led him to postpone it.
On this occasion, neither Moncloa nor Zarzuela wanted to confirm the arrival of the Ukrainian president safety reasons. All of Zelensky’s foreign trips are prepared with great caution and are usually only confirmed once he reaches the destination.
This happened last October, when the Ukrainian president traveled to Granada to attend the European Political Community summit. Its presence was therefore only confirmed when it was already in Spanish territory.
The main reason for the trip will be signing of the security agreement negotiated bilaterally by the two governments and which corresponds to the agreements signed by the G7 countries and other Europeans. The purpose of this agreement is that Ukraine predictability in terms of the security assistance it will receive over a given period.
In the absence of officially announcing the agenda of the visit, a meeting with the President of the Government is expected, Pedro Sanchezwho has traveled to Kiev twice since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022 to sign the said agreement.
In the same way, there will also be a meeting with King Felipe VI, whom he already met during his trip to Granada, which will be followed, if the failed trip was planned, a lunch in his honor at the Royal Palace. The stay could be supplemented with some kind of event at the Congress of Deputies.
