Taiwan says it has again discovered dozens of Chinese ships and military aircraft near the island. The Defense Ministry in Taipei said Monday that 21 fighter jets and 15 Navy and Coast Guard ships were spotted in the past 24 hours alone.
Ten aircraft entered Taiwan’s air surveillance zone, Taiwan said. China held a two-day large-scale exercise near Taiwan last week. According to information from Taipei, China used 111 aircraft and dozens of naval ships in its show of force.
Taiwan seceded from communist mainland China 75 years ago at the end of the civil war. Since then, Beijing has regarded the island as a breakaway province that should be reunited with the mainland – with military force if necessary.
Beijing has been increasing political pressure since 2016
Since 2016, China has dramatically increased political and military pressure on Taiwan, sending fighter jets and warships to the island almost every day, even outside of maneuvers.
