An observant hiker discovered the tracks of a brown bear in the Rankweil-Übersaxen area in Vorarlberg on Sunday. State ecologist Hubert Schatz took a closer look at the track on Monday and confirmed his suspicions.
“It is clearly the trail of a bear,” says Hubert Schatz firmly. From his point of view, there is no reason to panic. Because the trail found in Rankweil-Übersaxen is located in a busy local recreation area, certain behavioral recommendations should be followed.
Hikers must therefore be particularly careful in this area, do not leave the marked paths and always keep dogs on a leash. Walks in the woods at night or at dusk should be avoided.
The following applies to everyone: No food or other waste may be left in the forest. Anyone living in the area should store their trash so that bears cannot rummage through it.
Farmers and other livestock keepers are advised to keep their livestock indoors at night. Owners of beehives are advised to secure them with an electric fence.
Report sightings
Anyone who finds further tracks or sightings of the bear should report it to the nearest police station, district administration or state wildlife ecologist.
