Late Monday evening a serious traffic accident took place on the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) near Deutschfeistritz, north of Graz. A tire blowout caused a rental car to land sideways on the road and a taxi coming from behind crashed into it. Seven people were injured.
Shortly before 11 a.m. on Monday evening, a 51-year-old German man and his 50-year-old wife were driving in a rental car on the A9 towards Graz when the dramatic scenes unfolded. A tire may have burst near the Deutschfeistritz gas station along the highway and the car may have skidded.
The car crashed into the barrier and came to a stop on the other side of the road in the first and second lanes. The two occupants were able to quickly escape from the vehicle. However, the car became a major danger for the following vehicles: A 54-year-old taxi driver from Graz was no longer able to brake in time and collided head-on with the rental car.
He had four passengers on board (26, 28, 37 and 53), all of whom were injured. The 37-year-old even had to be rescued by the rescue helicopter with serious injuries. All other occupants are believed to have escaped with minor injuries. The police, the Red Cross and three fire brigades were present. The A9 was closed towards Graz for about two hours.
