The General Deputy of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe, has appeared before the plenary of the General Assemblies of Bizkaia to respond to a question from EH Bildu, whose member has demanded the improvement of frequencies on Line 1 to serve the Uribe Kosta region .
The general deputy of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobehas assured that it is currently possible to improve the frequencies of Line 1 of Metro Bilbao and has pointed out that the suburb will “soon” face the renovation of its units, of which there are 24 active since 1995which, together with the renewal of communication and signaling systems, will make it possible to “redefine” the service to adapt it to the demands of the coming years.
Etxanobe appeared this Wednesday before the plenary meeting of the General Assemblies of Bizkaia to respond to a question from EH Bildu, whose board member Raul Mendez has demanded the improvement of the frequencies offered by Metro Bilbao on line 1 to serve the Uribe Kosta region, a request that, as he explained, the town halls of Leioa, Getxo, Berango, Sopela, Urduliz, Plentzia and Gorliz in separate motions adopted therein.
The representative has warned that despite the fact that demographic growth in this region has been ‘exponential’ since the launch of this metro line ago almost 30 yearsthe frequencies ‘have hardly changed’ and, in the case of Urduliz and Plentzia ‘always in values between 18 and 20 Moreover, he has defended the need to ensure “dignified service delivery” for Urduliz Hospital.
On the other hand, he emphasized that the climate emergency makes it “more necessary than ever” to increase the supply of public transport to reduce emissions from private car traffic.
Mendez explained that during last April’s meeting between municipal officials and Metro Bilbao it was declared that the proposal of the Uribe Kosta municipalities is currently not viable “if the necessary investments are not made” and he has advocated for a solution to be found in the General Assemblies to search. agreement to “the financing necessary to enable the adaptation work or the purchase of new railway goods and equipment”.
In her response, the deputy, who is also chairman of Metro Bilbao and the Bizkaia Transport Consortium, criticized EH Bildu for suggesting that frequencies could be improved.as if it were something simplewhich simply consists of installing another train, and that it is a matter of political will.
Etxanobe has reiterated the regional government’s commitment to reflect on what “transport in Bizkaia will look like in the next ten, twenty or thirty years” and explained that, in this context, “the most important milestone” at the moment the renovation of the metro units that “will be addressed shortly” and which “would require a complex investment that also requires an in-depth study”.
