Moving video – Rescued from St. Stephen’s Cathedral: Tourist thanks

Date:

Manfred, from Aachen, Germany, was on his way to the summit when he collapsed into the south tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna on May 10. The Vienna Rescue Service’s rope technology task force and the fire brigade’s high-altitude rescue team rescued him from his predicament. Now he thanks his rescuers.

It was his third time in Vienna, but never in St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The 77-year-old Manfred has climbed towers several times. Therefore, climbing the South Tower was an important point on the program for him. However, this time he overestimated his strength – said Manfred in a thank you video to the Vienna Professional Rescue Service, which they published on Instagram a few days ago.

Wanted to visit the Türmerstube
The German tourist actually wanted to visit the tower room of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, but suffered medical problems at a height of 70 meters. Those present alerted the emergency services, who quickly arrived on the scene. Manfred was brought back to the ground together with 22 firefighters and rescue teams from the rope technology group. He was then taken to a hospital.

“It was only at the university hospital that I realized what I had done”
With a video, Manfred now thanks the Viennese professional rescue service for their efforts. He says he didn’t even realize what he had caused. While rappelling, he did not notice his companion. It was only at the university hospital that he realized the magnitude of the effort.

At the age of 77, he simply overestimated his strength. Thanks to the large rescue team, he was able to continue his program the next day. “The professional rescue team from Vienna is great,” says Manfred, beaming and healthy, into the camera at the end of the video.
