Beijing continues to attack Taiwan head-on. Statements by the Chinese Minister of Defense offer little hope for peace. China is determined to use all possible means to prevent Taiwan from gaining independence.
Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun intensified the dispute with Taiwan on Sunday in his speech at the international defense conference “Shangri-La Dialogue” in Singapore.
He said: “China remains committed to peaceful reunification, but this prospect is increasingly undermined by pro-Taiwan independence separatists and foreign forces.”
Beijing sees “conspiracy”
The minister vowed to ensure that Taiwan’s independence never becomes a reality: “We will take decisive action to curb Taiwan’s independence and ensure that such a plot never succeeds.”
In his speech, Dong said Taiwan is the “core of core problems” for China, but Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party is gradually pursuing separatism and aiming to erase Chinese identity.
Relationship increasingly irritable
China regards democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory, although the government in Taipei strongly rejects this. Taiwan’s newly elected president Lai Ching-te calls Beijing a “separatist.” Although China recently held military exercises near Taiwan to demonstrate and provoke its power, Lai remained willing to talk.
But China refuses to talk to Lai and is angry that the US has repeatedly offered support to Taiwan. Lai rejects Beijing’s claims of sovereignty and says only the Taiwanese people can decide its future.
