Escape not possible – Fall of 60 meters on snow field: rescue difficult

Date:

Many snow fields in the mountains currently pose a danger to hikers. A 33-year-old fell into the depths near Ellmau in Tyrol on Sunday. Rescuing the man was extremely difficult due to the weather conditions.

The 33-year-old German was out in the Tyrolean mountains on Sunday with two compatriots (35 and 39). From the Stripsenjochhaus near Ellmau the trio climbed towards Hoher Winkel. The men had to cross a snow field.

The 33-year-old fell onto the slippery surface. His companions had to watch as the man crashed into a rock and then fell 60 meters away. The hiker was left seriously injured on a gravel tire.

The helicopter was initially unable to take off in the fog
Rescuing the injured man was very difficult as the emergency medical helicopter was initially unable to reach the man in the fog. Mountain rescuers were flown as far as possible to the accident site and cordoned off. They climbed on foot to the injured man and treated him.

Moments later, rescuers used a sun window and were able to rescue the 33-year-old using rope on the helicopter. The man was flown to hospital and his shocked companions were taken to the valley by police helicopter.
