Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that he will not stand for re-election as leader of the Conservative Party and British Prime Minister. The application deadline ends this afternoon and the former UK economy minister Rishi Sunak is the favourite to become the next head of British government after Truss resigns.

In recent days, Johnson’s name had gained momentum to take over the position. He had the necessary guarantees to submit his candidacy to extend the Conservative Party presidency and thus his former position as head of the country’s government.

However, Johnson said in a statement that, despite much needed support from Conservative MPs, he concluded that “it just wouldn’t be the right choice” because “you can’t govern effectively unless there is a united party in parliament”.

For his part, the former economy minister, Rishi Sunak, has confirmed his candidacy and appears to be a strong contender to take the keys to the Downing Street residence with more than 100 support from “Tory” deputies needed to access the primaries. while the other candidate is the Conservative leader in the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt.

According to the media, Mordaunt has not had enough support so far, although sources from his campaign have insisted that he will.

This Monday is the deadline for deputies aspiring to the “tory” leadership to submit their candidacy, provided they have the support of at least 100 members of the parliamentary Conservative group (out of a total of 357). According to media calculations, Sunak already has the support of 154 deputies and Mordaunt only 25.

Waiting to see who will support those who would vote for Johnson, if Mordaunt doesn’t get enough support, Rishi Sunak could become Britain’s next prime minister today.
