A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck central Japan at 6:31 a.m. (local time, 11:31 p.m. Sunday evening CEST). The epicenter was on the Noto Peninsula in central Japan. Initially there were no reports of damage. No tsunami warning was issued.
Three houses collapsed, according to the disaster management authority. However, there were no reports of deaths or injuries. Images from public television channel NHK showed at least one house with its walls heavily damaged and its tiled roof partially collapsed to the ground.
Nuclear power plants without damage
Japan’s nuclear regulator said no unusual activity was detected at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa and Shika nuclear power plants on the coast.
Still, the weather authority called for caution. Landslides and rock falls could occur in the region after rainfall or further earthquakes, she warned.
However, an earthquake on New Year’s Day killed more than 230 people on the Noto Peninsula.
