6-1: Flamengo beat Vasco da Gama

Date:

He Flamengo ran over this Sunday Vasco da Gama, beat them 6-1 and took first position in the Brazilian league, which returned this weekend with a seventh matchday after a fifteen-day break due to floods in southern Brazil. The team led by ‘Tite’ beat their bitterest rivals at the Maracaná in a match that started aimlessly but quickly improved to reach 14 points.

Vasco was surprised, he took the lead with the Argentine Pablo Vegetti, but the advantage and satisfaction was short-lived. Everton Cebolinha equalized and the match went in favor of a very good Flamengo led by Uruguayan Giorgian De Arrascaeta, who showed his best football and where the whole creative game went.

Still in the first period, Cebolinha appeared, reactivated by the Uruguayan, and launched a cross that eluded goalkeeper Lauro Jardim so Pedro scored the second with a chest blow. Flamengo went 1-3 at the end of the first half through David Luiz and things got worse for Vasco with João Victor sent off for a heavy foul on Uruguayan Nicolás de la Cruz.

The second half started with a goal from Arrascaeta and continued with more displays of skill from the Uruguayan, who left four players on the way and touched down for Bruno Henrique to score the fifth. One was lost and Gabriel Barbosa ‘Gabigol’ converted it, to complete what was the biggest victory for Flamengo against its historical rivals, who are at the bottom of the table, with six points.

With 14 points, but with a worse goal difference than Flamengo, Bahía also arrived, drawing 1-1 in its visit to Atlético Mineiro. They are followed by Botafogo, who this Saturday beat Corinthians and have 13 points, the same as Sao Paulo, who beat Cruzeiro 2-0 and improved game after game under the leadership of Argentine coach Luis Zubeldía

Athletico Paranaense also has thirteen points, leading until now but losing to visiting Fortaleza, who despite a 1-0 win are in the middle of the table, with ten points. As the league returns to action after floods that left 170 people dead and a huge trail of destruction in southern Brazil, Palmeiras also made up ground, beating Criciúma 1-2 and moving up to seventh place, which there are eleven points.
