Ruling Claudia Sheinbaum’s party maintains a wide lead in Mexico’s presidential election, with more than 57% of votes after 25% of minutes closely monitored, according to the National Electoral Institute’s (INE) preliminary count, compared to 30% of its main rival, the opposition Xóchitl Gálvez.
According to the sample of 42,730 voting registrations, just over 25% of the INE total, up to 23:25 local time (07:25 Euskal Herria). Sheinbaumcandidate of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), has the 57.25% of the votes on national level.
According to these data, the candidate of the Force and Heart for Mexico coalition, composed of the National Action Parties (PAN), Institutional Revolutionary Parties (PRI) and the Democratic Revolution (PRD), Gálvez barely achieved 30% of the votes.
While the candidate of the opposition party Citizen Movement (MC), Jorge Álvarez Máynez has harvested 10.34% of the votes.
This Sunday, Mexico celebrated the largest elections in its history, with more than 98 million people called in to renew more than 20,000 positions, including the presidency, the 500 deputies, the 128 senators and nine state governments.
These elections were also the most violent in Mexico’s history, with at least thirty candidates murdered.
