On Friday, a Swiss dairy farmer was caught trying to smuggle 900 kilos of cheese into the EU. He was able to cross the border with Vorarlberg unmolested, but then became entangled in German customs in Lindau.
The officers removed the van from traffic during a spontaneous check on the A96 immediately after the German-Austrian border. With this they literally showed a good nose: the Swiss turned out to have loaded 200 wheels with the best Swiss mountain cheese – but the goods had not been cleared at customs and the import permit from a veterinarian was also missing.
When asked about the missing papers, Senn, 41, assured that it was his first delivery to Germany and that he assumed the recipient would take care of the tax matters.
In the end, he got away with ease: although he had to declare the cheese on the spot for around 2,800 euros and get approval from a veterinarian, he was then allowed to continue his journey with the cargo.
