As of last week, Donald Trump has become a convicted felon. Meanwhile, the Republican presidential candidate has been quite successful in delaying further criminal proceedings.
The responsible appeals court in the US state of Georgia has temporarily frozen the election fraud case against former President Donald Trump. Before it can move forward, a decision must first be made as to whether the chief prosecutor can continue her investigation.
The three appeal judges – all appointed by Republicans – are expected to rule on the case in March 2025. An initial hearing is scheduled for October.
Lawyers for Trump and other suspects accuse prosecutor Fani Willis of illegally benefiting financially from a relationship with another prosecutor in the case, Nathan Wade. Wade was overpaid in his position and invited Willis on luxurious vacations together. Willis rejects this.
In March, the judge responsible, Scott McAfee, ruled that the evidence from the other side was not sufficient to prove that the prosecutor had a conflict of interest.
However, Wade withdrew from the proceedings due to what McAfee deemed an “appearance of impropriety.” Trump’s side subsequently filed an appeal, which the responsible court granted in May. However, Judge McAfee initially allowed the hearing to proceed in his courtroom while the appeals court ruling was still pending.
