Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister, apologized on Friday for leaving the D-Day commemorations in Normandy early.
“After completing the British event in Normandy I returned to Britain,” said the 44-year-old, who apologized for the “mistake”.
Opposition politicians sharply criticized Sunak. “One of the greatest privileges of being premier is honoring those who served, but Rishi Sunak left them on the beaches of Normandy,” accused the Liberal Democrats’ Ed Davey. “This is an absolute dereliction of duty and shows why this Conservative government must go.” Britain will elect a new parliament on July 4.
Political commentators noted that Sunak’s decision had left the ground to his opponent Keir Starmer, who took part in the international commemoration and whose Labor Party has long led in the polls.
Sunak wrote in his apology that the D-Day commemoration was an important moment to recognize the brave men and women who risked their lives to defend freedom and democracy. “The last thing I want is for the commemorations to be overshadowed by politics,” his post said.
