The shock is still deep even days later: after the animal tragedy in a small community in Attergau (Upper Austria), where the official veterinarian ordered the evacuation of a farmer’s stable and had 94 cows and calves killed in an emergency, the question now arises why people watched for so long. But this drama that has now come to light is far from an isolated incident…
As is known, the farmer from Attergau has had to endure a lot – and now there is more to come: As is known, the farmer in his mid-fifties is said to have let 104 cows and calves starve and thirst in his stables.
When neighbors reported it, it was already too late: the official veterinarian of Vöcklabruck had the stables cleared and 94 animals killed. The difference with an emergency slaughter: “The meat can still be used during slaughter, but not during an emergency slaughter,” explains district captain Johannes Beer.
Boer now risks a prison sentence
The farmer, who lives and runs the farm with his almost 90-year-old mother, must now also expect criminal consequences. The police and BH reported him to the Public Prosecution Service for animal abuse; This crime carries a prison sentence of up to two years. As bitter as it sounds, the farmer ultimately risks a prison sentence.
Last year, authorities in Upper Austria had to intervene a total of eleven times because the animals were not cared for sufficiently. In nine cases, a ban on keeping animals was ultimately imposed.
